Origins
Toto's early history that began in 1917, mirrored Japan's economic expansion. In the first half, Toto produced products to meet the growing demand for modern, new urban housing. To achieve this, it used the country's first tunnel kiln to make ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use automation to control production, which allows for more efficiency and consistency.
In the late 1980s the company began to expand overseas to benefit from sales and new markets. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and marketing other manufacturers' products to complement its own range of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy helped increase sales and expand the firm’s global market share.
In the 1990s Toto began to concentrate on research and development of water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better meet the needs of its customers and boost profits. The company embraced a just-in time approach to supply chain management and applied the same methodology for its sales process. This resulted in a higher level customer satisfaction.
Toto continued to innovate toilet technology. The latest toilet, for example is equipped with a strong tornado flush that is more ecologically friendly than traditional toilets. The company also makes use of recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green procurement policy. Toto also produces faucets, bathtubs and hand dryers with greater energy efficiency than standard models.
The first Toto museum opened in 2015. It has exhibitions on Toto's most famous products, their evolution, the group companies (all of which are made of ceramics) as well as the history of plumbing and products such as bath units. In another gallery, visitors can view Toto products sold all over. The museum also has a bathroom that includes the WASHLET toilet, as well as other toilet-related innovations.
Before the formation of Toto the band, members of the group performed sessions for various musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also performed on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet arrangement of previous albums and was a more ferocious, constant effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. Bobby Kimball's growing proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloying than earlier performances.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album followed just a few months later and the group went on a world-wide tour in support of the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old tapes and demos for an album that would feature songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 and released as a double album called Then and Now. It was the band's first album without the single track "A". The album also contained an previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New was an uncommercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that restricted his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
Downes along with the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the group. The group, which was missing Howe who was busy with Yes during that time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had a special guest appearance from singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
