Line-up
The album's third, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet arrangement of previous albums. It was a more ferocious, constant effort with an edge that was stronger than Hydra. Its more punk-rock sound was indicative of the maturation of group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's greater ability on the drums and an improved, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's work was more precise, sharper and less cloying than previously recorded efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the band recorded the band's Amsterdam live show that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a brand new studio album just a few months after and embarked on a world tour support the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old tapes and demos for an album that would feature songs that had never been recorded before. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis infection which limited his singing capabilities. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the group. This lineup, minus Howe who was working with Yes during that time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
